Adult Gymnastics Grips

Did you rip?  Do you know what that means? It’s a blister on the palm of your hand that peels open, burns, and makes it painful to keep training on the bars or rings.

Once you develop calluses on your palms you’ll be able to train for longer periods of time, but even with hardened hands, Gymnastics Grips will not only save you the discomfort of ripping, but will also allow you to train longer and even perform more difficult skills.

There are different types of grips that we’ll discuss below and give you links to recommendations for each, but the basic idea is put some material between your hand and the apparatus to keep your skin safe!

Different Types of Grips

Dowel Grips

Dowel grips are the most common type of gymnastics grip used by athletes at all levels. These grips feature a small dowel rod near the fingers, which helps you hold onto the apparatus more securely, reducing the risk of slipping.

Pros:
  • Improved grip strength and security
  • Reduced risk of hand injuries
  • Available for both men’s and women’s apparatuses
Cons:
  • May take time to break in
  • Can be difficult to adjust to, especially for beginners

Palm Grips

Palm grips, also known as beginner grips, are a simplified version of dowel grips. They don’t have the dowel rod, which makes them an excellent option for those who are new to the sport and still learning basic techniques.

Pros:
  • Easier to adjust to for beginners
  • More affordable than dowel grips
  • Can be used on various apparatuses
Cons:
  • Less grip security compared to dowel grips
  • Not suitable for advanced skills or competitive athletes

Adhesive Grips

These are another beginner option.  They are an athletic tape, similar to KT tape, that protect the palms of your hands.

Pros:
  • Easier to adjust to for beginners
  • More comfortable than other grips
  • Can be used on various apparatuses
Cons:
  • Less grip security compared to dowel grips
  • Not suitable for advanced skills or competitive athletes
  • Single use, so you’ll end up paying more money for these over time.
